Modeling the rock cycle

Students build a diagram model showing how heat, pressure, weathering, and erosion move Earth materials between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock, then use it to trace one rock's possible history.

Students will be able to

  • Develop a model describing how Earth materials cycle among rock types.
  • Use the model to explain a process that could form a given rock sample.

Standards

  • Aligned to MS-ESS2-1 — Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth's materials and the flow of energy that drives that cycling.
