Adding fractions with the same denominator

Students fold paper strips into equal parts, then add fractions that share a denominator and check the sum against the model.

Students will be able to

  • Add two fractions that have the same denominator.
  • Explain why the denominator stays the same using a paper-strip model.

Standards

  • Aligned to CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3 — Add and subtract fractions with like denominators by joining and separating parts of the same whole.
